How to choose an office chair mechanism

The mechanism is both a structural and adjustment component. A similar appearance is not enough: mounting dimensions and functions must match.

Mechanism type

Identify whether the chair uses a tilt, synchro or another adjustment system.

Mounting dimensions

Measure screw-hole spacing and the dimensions of the plate fixed beneath the seat.

Gas-lift interface

Check that the central socket is compatible with the gas lift and chair configuration.

What to check before replacing the mechanism

Correct identification prevents buying a component that physically fits but does not reproduce the chair functions.

1. Diagnose the fault

Confirm that the mechanism is the failed component rather than the gas lift, castors or base.

2. Measure the mounting pattern

Record centre-to-centre screw spacing plus plate width and length.

3. Check adjustment functions

Confirm levers, locking positions, tilt, tension and synchro functions that must be retained.

4. Check the gas lift

Verify the central socket and the position of the height-control actuator.

5. Fit and test

Tighten fixings correctly and test stability, height, locking and tilt before normal use.

Complete the chair repair

If more components are affected, compare gas lifts, bases and castors to identify which parts actually need replacing.

How do I know whether a mechanism is compatible with my chair?

Compare the screw pattern beneath the seat, plate dimensions, gas-lift socket and adjustment functions. Similar appearance alone does not guarantee compatibility.

What is the difference between a tilt and synchro mechanism?

A tilt mechanism normally moves seat and backrest together, while a synchro mechanism coordinates them at a designed ratio to improve support during recline.

Does the mechanism also control chair height?

It normally contains the lever that operates the gas lift, but the gas lift itself provides the vertical movement.

Which measurements should I take before ordering?
