We are talking more and more about what we can do to improve our planet. One of the things within our reach is RECYCLING, which involves reducing waste so that materials and products can be used again, following the 3Rs: reduce, reuse and recycle. When we think about recycling, plastic and paper often come to mind, but we can reuse millions of items and materials, including fabrics and textiles, ferrous materials, electronic components and wood, among many others.
We need to broaden our perspective and recognise that we must look after the environment. When it comes to reuse, let us focus on the area that concerns us: office furniture. We tend to assume that anything thrown away must be in poor condition, but this is far from the truth. Some furniture is indeed no longer usable, but many offices replace perfectly serviceable furniture because, for example, a once-small office now accommodates many more people and needs to be reorganised. That furniture is still in excellent condition and can be given a second life.
How do we help the planet by reusing office furniture? We cut down far fewer trees to obtain the wood used in our desks, and we release far fewer pollutants into the air in our cities by avoiding the manufacture of new metal frames for office desks and chairs. We also generate far less waste. Millions of tonnes of rubbish are produced, some of which may end up in our oceans and rivers, while air pollution can make our cities difficult to breathe in.
We can summarise the benefits in 4 points:
1.- We save energy and help combat climate change.
Recycling reduces energy consumption by limiting the need to produce new raw materials, thereby reducing the energy required for these manufacturing processes.
We reduce pollution, improving air quality and, in turn, our health, while also reducing the greenhouse effect on our planet.
2.- We reduce the use of raw materials.
If we recycle our office desks, for example, we save a significant amount of natural resources—in this case, wood and iron. Saving wood helps preserve our forests, which act as filters by removing pollution, as a single tree can absorb up to 150 kg of CO2. The same applies to iron: it is a natural resource and is therefore not inexhaustible.
3.- We support employment.
Every item that we recycle rather than throw away must be processed and returned to the market in the best possible condition, giving it a long service life. If it is no longer usable, each component can be recycled separately and given a new purpose.
4.- We look after the environment.
The amount of waste we send to landfill can be significantly reduced by recycling our products. As mentioned at the outset, we need to change our mindset and recognise that something we no longer need may still be useful to someone else. In this way, we leave a much smaller footprint on our planet because, when we recycle:
Industry produces far less pollution.
We protect our land and rivers by ensuring that waste is treated properly.
