Four signs that it is time to replace your office chair.

When you look around your office and consider which items need replacing, a few things may stand out. The old coffee machine may be near the top of the list. Upgrading your technology with a fast new computer or a printer that does not jam is always welcome.

Yes, there are probably several items on your office replacement wish list. One thing that may be overlooked is your task chair. After all, a chair is just a chair, right? If only it were that simple.

Having the wrong chair for your needs can cause numerous problems and reduce your ability to work effectively and efficiently. But how can you tell when it is time to replace a task chair? Here are some signs to look out for.

Damage to the chair or its components:

This is probably the most obvious reason to replace your office chair. When something breaks, most people do not need to ask, ‘Do I need a new chair?’

Of course, a chair that has fallen apart into several pieces will be more noticeable than one with minor damage. However, there are some early signs of damage you can look out for.

Loose or sticking castors are a good indication that you may need to replace your task chair. If you find yourself having to push harder to move across the floor and the castors do not respond to your movements, it may be time to consider replacing your chair.

Loose or non-functioning components that are often overlooked include the armrests, knobs and levers, such as those used to control the height of the seat and backrest. If any of these parts no longer allow you to adjust the chair to support your posture, or require frequent readjustment, you should consider looking for a new task chair.

Flattened seat cushion:

Over time, the foam in the seat cushion will begin to compress and flatten. Your seat cushion is one of the most important parts of your chair, as it plays a vital role in preventing back and body pain.

When the seat cushion becomes compressed, it provides less support for your body weight. This places strain on your lower back. Anyone who has experienced lower-back pain knows that it can have far-reaching effects on many areas of life beyond the work carried out in your chair.

Show your back and its muscles some care: replace your chair once the seat cushion can no longer do its job.

Poorly fitting task chair:

It is possible that your chair was never right for you. This is particularly true for people who have taken over an existing office space that was already furnished.

Some chairs may have armrests that are too far apart and cannot be adjusted inwards sufficiently to suit your body. Other chairs may have backrests designed for people who are taller or shorter than you.

If you are going to spend a great deal of time working in your task chair, it may be worth replacing one that does not suit your individual needs. Your body will thank you for it.

The chair no longer feels right:

Sometimes there is no scientific reason to replace a task chair. It may simply come down to the chair no longer feeling comfortable.

This is just as valid a reason to replace your task chair as any of those listed above. Think about how many hours a day you spend sitting in it. People spend a great deal of money on beds because they spend so much time sleeping in them; choosing the right chair is equally important, as you may spend almost as much time sitting in it.

A chair that is perfectly ergonomic for one person may not be suitable for another. You may dislike your current chair without having an obvious reason to replace it. Listen to your body; it knows best whether your chair is right for you.
