How to Design the Perfect Office

There is no specific template to follow when it comes to designing the perfect office, as everyone has different expectations, needs and requirements. Some people want elegance, others prefer something unconventional, while some are looking for highly extravagant results. How you design the perfect office ultimately depends on the individual, but here is a comprehensive guide to help you get started.

First, are you designing an office in your own commercial premises or a home office? There are different factors to consider for each type of office. For example, a home office will need to be in a quiet, distraction-free area, whereas a conventional office will be entirely dedicated to work. The types of furniture and floor plan you use will also differ between the two types of office. With a home office, you will generally have less space to work with than in an entire office building.

You will also need to ask yourself a few questions, such as:

  • What type of work will be carried out in your office space?
  • Will clients visit your office?
  • Will colleagues visit to work with you on projects?
  • What type of materials will you need, and how often will you need them?
  • Will you make video calls or hold video conferences?

Make sure you also have the right equipment for your needs. Do not spend large amounts of money on equipment you do not really need. For example, if you only use that combined fax machine and printer once a week, is it worth buying one, or would it be better to use a print shop?

Having the right technology is also important. A reliable wireless internet connection is essential to ensure you always have a signal in your office, allowing you to stand up and do whatever you need to stay focused on your work without losing connectivity or becoming tangled in cables. Another important consideration is a dedicated telephone line for your office, so clients do not constantly encounter an engaged tone or poor mobile reception at their end.

Keep distractions out of your office! You may think you will be able to ignore the television on the wall, but it is better not to tempt yourself. Halfway through the day, when procrastination sets in, that television will become your worst enemy. Avoid temptation and simply remove potential distractions from your working environment to ensure you have a quiet space where you can concentrate.
