We have published several blog posts offering advice on buying furniture, but this one takes the opposite approach: we are going to highlight the advice you should ignore when choosing furniture for your office.
Bigger is better:
Many people think that the bigger the desk, the better. Nothing could be further from the truth. Desks are becoming smaller as IT equipment takes up less space and we work with less paper. To choose the perfect desk, we need to consider what we actually need. A very large desk in a small space can ruin an office by restricting walkways or taking up space that could be used for cupboards, filing cabinets, etc.
Use all the available space:
Leaving some space empty does not mean it is being wasted. From a design perspective, it can work very well, making the office feel more spacious and brighter than if it were crammed with furniture. This can also boost productivity and creativity by creating a pleasant working environment.
Neutral colours:
Offices are usually decorated in neutral colours and wood finishes, but this does not have to be the case. More and more companies are incorporating their corporate colours into their offices, creating workplaces with personality that reflect their brand.
Studies show that beige or grey offices tend to hinder productivity.
Clean-desk policy:
Opinions can vary widely on this point. It all depends on the working environment we want to create within the company: whether we want a relaxed, friendly workplace where employees can keep personal items at their workstations, or a more formal and professional setting.
All staff should have the same office furniture:
All office furniture should, of course, complement each other, but every employee does not need to have exactly the same desk. For example, administrative staff often work with large amounts of paperwork and folders, so they may need a larger desk than someone who does not use folders. We need to consider several factors, such as whether storage cupboards are required, as not every employee will have the same needs.
Finally, we should aim to minimise paper consumption as much as possible, always keeping the environment in mind. Likewise, by using recycled furniture, we give it a new purpose and generate less waste for our planet.
