What does our desk say about us?

Our office desk can say a great deal about us to our colleagues or prospective clients, as it may reflect what we are like outside work.

We spend a significant part of our lives at our workstations, and as we have mentioned in a previous blog post, personalising our desks is important.

We can also look at our colleagues' desks and get an idea of what they are like. When we see desks covered in papers, empty food containers or dirty coffee cups, we often wonder how anyone can work in such a mess. At least, as the saying goes, we know how we do not want our workstation to look.

Our workspace reflects our personality. We can group workspaces into five recognised personality types:

The minimalist:

People with a perfectly organised desk tend to be dedicated, disciplined and organised.

These employees are conscientious and hard-working; they like to make plans and follow the rules.

The hoarder:

At first glance, there is no room on their desk for another folder—or even another sheet of paper or Post-it note. Their drawers are full, and they want to keep everything within easy reach, even when they are not using it, because it all belongs to them.

They tend to submit their work right at the deadline, despite having everything close at hand to help them meet it.

The coloniser:

They like having plenty of space. You have probably already thought of someone in your company who leaves papers on desks that are not theirs, gradually taking over shared areas...

They tend to be people who like to assert their status and territory and  can be excessively dominant.

The personaliser:

An open and honest person who likes to personalise their desk to make it feel more like home.  They often have personal photographs, their own mugs, and so on.

This personality type tends to be more common among women than men, and they generally report greater job satisfaction.
