Workplace dress code

We need to pay close attention to what we wear to our workstation in the office, as it is very important and can affect our career progression within the company. With this in mind, we would like to offer a few tips that we hope you will find helpful.

What is a dress code?

Let us begin by defining the term “business dress code”. It refers to the clothes we wear to our workstation. Depending on the type of work we do, there are several dress codes, which can be classified as traditional or formal, casual and executive. If the company does not have an “official dress code”, we can look at what our colleagues and managers wear and follow the well-known saying, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do”.

We generally wear conservative clothing to present ourselves as professionally as possible, but that does not mean we need to wear our best suit, as this is usually reserved for job interviews. However, professionals in sectors such as finance, banking and accountancy often wear this type of clothing every day.

Dressing professionally is crucial to succeeding within our company, as our appearance creates the first impression.

Informal or casual attire:

There is no clear definition of this type of attire, but what is certain is that it does not involve wearing a suit, either for women or men. We understand it to mean shirts or jumpers with smart trousers, or a skirt for women (always conservative), without being overly strict.

We would not consider polo shirts particularly appropriate for informal or casual attire, although dress codes do tend to become slightly more relaxed in summer, as wearing a suit in 40-degree heat can be very difficult.

Wearing very brightly coloured clothing to the office can draw everyone’s attention to us, which may not necessarily be a good thing. Bright colours should therefore be worn in moderation.
